Part One

Module 1: Global Trends in Energy Transition Financing and Renewable Energy Strategy and Sustainable Finance Targets

  • Overview of energy transition trends globally (volumes, growth rates, key growth areas, the main markets, and the key arrangers/lenders)
  • Key drivers (Paris Agreement, local regulation and microeconomic: energy security and wars in Ukraine and the Middle East) and challenges in renewable energy project financing
  • Explanation of why the Paris Agreement was and is so important
  • Overview of key definitions and terms used
  • Summary of current energy production both tradition and renewable
  • Summary of relevant renewables national and sector targets as well as their individual implementation strategies, with a particular focus on the difficulties in their achievement, both known and unknown
  • Net zero strategy and commitments to sustainable finance (incl. the importance of tracking progress accurately to avoid greenwashing accusations and litigations)

Module 2: Renewable Energy Sub-Sector Technologies 

  • Overview of traditional technologies: wind turbines, solar panels, geothermal, biomass
  • Case studies such as Drax Energy (wood) and the “London Array”, Beatrice and Beatrice extension (offshore wind)
  • Summary of other current sub-sector examples such as HydroWing, MeyGen and Ocean Star Trial (tidal) and solar farms; Llanwern, Shotwick, West Raynham, The Grange, Larks Green, Snarlton Farm, and Eveley Farm
  • Exploration of innovative technologies: solar battery storage, offshore floating wind (“FLOW”), tidal energy, hydrogen, BECCS, thermal (“TES”) with CCUS etc), including cost/benefit analysis of each;

Module 3: Renewable Energy Financing Mechanisms and Risk Mitigation 

  • Overview of renewable energy financing mechanisms and their distinctions from regular project finance transactions
  • Key parties (SPV, lenders, guarantor, construction company, PPP/ offtake agreement buyers); and
  • Key risks in renewable energy projects (e.g. early start pre-construction stage, uncertainty about revenue streams, technological, regulatory, and market uncertainties) and mitigation strategies.

Part Two

Module 4: Documentation Process for Renewable Energy Finance

  • Introduction to documentation requirements for renewable energy projects (type of agreements e.g. recourse and non-recourse loan agreement with SPV, Intercreditor, performance bonds, and guarantee agreements, etc)
  • Key finance principles of project finance explained; such as debt repayment, risk allocation, recourse and non-recourse, common financial covenants and compliance
  • Importance of Economic Viability of all renewable energy projects
  • Overview of the LMA Green Loan template updated in November 2024
  • Financing Nuclear in the UK: The Regulated Asset Base (“RAB”) model v Contact for Differences (“CfD”)
  • Many renewable energy agreements will qualify as Green Loans for impact-tracking

With nearly thirty years of international experience in renewables and structured finance transaction management, this renewables training course expert has worked both in-house and in private practice, helping clients achieve their commercial and strategic objectives while mitigating risk and maximising value. His expertise spans asset finance, project finance, and trade finance, with a particular focus on the renewables, aviation and marine sectors.

His professional experience extends across key financial hubs, including London, Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, Japan, Europe, and North America.

He is qualified in both Scots and English law and has previously been a registered foreign lawyer in Hong Kong and the Isle of Man.  He is also the sole authorised legal advisor in the UK for the governments of the Republics of Kiribati and Tuvalu.

In addition to legal and financial advisory roles, he is an experienced industry trainer, collaborating with leading professional training providers to deliver specialised finance and legal courses.

Recognised by Legal 500 for his in-depth expertise in asset finance (shipping and aviation), project finance (LNG, oil & gas), structured finance, trade finance, and general banking, Redcliffe’s trainer has held senior positions in both in-house and private practice roles, including at Magic Circle firms.   • Served as sole legal advisor to two UK air ambulance charitable trusts on helicopter fleet management.
  • Provided legal guidance on commercial drone access rights in the UK and international markets, restructuring an existing UK product to align with new legal frameworks while optimising client benefits.
  • Acted as primary legal advisor for the launch of the first high-speed passenger ferry service between Hong Kong and Macau in over thirty years.
  • Overhauled the domestic and international trade terms for a major Middle Eastern sovereign oil and gas producer.
  • Advised an international lender syndicate on restructuring and recovery options in the largest UK trade finance fraud case of 2012-2013.
